4th November 2018, 11:00 - 14:30
Join Diane Cooper, from Surrey County Council’s Countryside team and Helen Cocker from Lower Mole Partnership to explore a part of the Thames Down Link from Ashtead station to Box Hill & Westhumble station. Take the 8 minute train ride back at the end of the day to Ashtead station.
The 15 mile Thames Down Link long distance trail runs from the Thames at Kingston to meet the North Downs Way at Westhumble, hence the route name. We will walk slightly more than 6 miles of this, which will take 3 hours plus and is longer than our usual free Sunday walks.
Meet us at Ashtead station, Woodfield Lane, KT21 2DR at 10.30am for a prompt 11am start. There is free roadside parking on Woodfield Lane as well as a large station car park, charge is £2.15 per day on a Sunday.
From Ashtead station we will walk towards Ashtead Park Local Nature Reserve, where we will join the Thames Down Link (TDL). The first part of the TDL goes through this lovely public open space and is easy-going and flat. The second longer section of the route from Stane Street is more rural with rugged terrain and some hilly parts. This will be slippery and muddy if the weather has been wet. There are no stiles, but some road crossings. Appropriate footwear is essential and a certain level of fitness is required to cope with this section of the walk. We will stop for a brief break only, but there will be an option to stop for a drink at the Stepping Stones Pub at the end of the walk. We will catch a train back to Ashtead from Box Hill & Westhumble Station. Trains leave at 10 minutes past the hour on a Sunday and cost £3.60.
You can see the route by clicking here, from where you can view the route on Google maps or the latest edition of the Ordnance Survey Map no. 146.
Please wear appropriate dress for the weather, stout walking shoes, bring water and snacks.
The event is free and open to all reasonably fit walkers. This event is run in conjunction with Lower Mole Partnership who promote and look after the route with their team of volunteers.
If the weather is bad or has been beforehand, we will offer an alternative shorter circular route around Ashtead Park Local Nature Reserve, starting from Ashtead station at 10.30am for 11am start.
