Explore the North Downs Way from Farnham to Chilworth

1st June 2019, 10:00 - 17:30

“Chapels & Chalk – A Pilgrimage” run in partnership with the Farnham Walking Festival

Join Pete Morris, the North Downs Way Manager, Chris Howard, Vice-President of the Surrey Hills Society and Pete Lambert, North Downs Way Ambassador on this 14 mile (22.5km) linear walk from Chilworth via Guildford.

The North Downs Way (NDW) National Trail offers 153 miles (246km) of spectacular scenery, picturesque villages and glorious rolling countryside, passing through the Surrey Hills and Kent Downs Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The route runs from Farnham in the west of the county through Guildford, Dorking and Reigate and on to Oxted. It then travels along this ancient chalk ridge to Canterbury and Dover.

There is a dedicated team looking after the North Downs Way. The Trail is funded by Natural England and Kent and Surrey County Councils. The Public Rights of Way Teams in Kent and Surrey look after the physical maintenance of the path. The North Downs Way is one of the 15 National Trails in England and Wales. National Trails are waymarked with a distinctive acorn symbol.

The walk will follow the North Downs Way, stopping at Puttenham for coffee break before heading on Watts Gallery and Chapel for the lunch break. Please bring a packed lunch as, although there is a great café at Watts, it may take too long for you to be served. We will then continue on the journey to Guildford where you may wish to end your journey. Alternatively you can continue with us up the steep ascent through the Chantries and up to St Martha’s Chapel, with its fantastic views over the Tillingbourne Valley. We will then make the sharp descent to the Chilworth Gunpowder Mills for a short tour before ending the journey at The Percy Arms Pub in Chilworth, GU4 8NP. We would be delighted if you joined us afterwards in the pub’s pleasant garden.

You then have the option to take either a bus or train back to Guildford before changing for return train or bus to Farnham.

The walk is free and recommended for fit walkers. The walk has several steep hills but no stiles. Bring plenty of water and lunch. Appropriate footwear and weatherproof clothing essential. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome on the walk. Children under 18 years must be supervised.

Meet us at Farnham Railway Station, GU9 8AD from 9.30am for a 10.00am prompt start and finish around 5.30pm. Parking with charges available in the town and at the station.

If you wish to join us, please book your place at the bottom of this page.
