Explore Thursley Common – free, guided walk

5th November 2017, 10:30 - 12:30

Thursley Common’s boggy heathland is considered to be one of the best examples of acidic bog land in the south east of England and at 350 hectares, one of the largest remaining fragments of heathland. It is a national nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. It provides important habitat for rare woodlarks and Dartford warblers and is also particularly noted for its range of dragonflies and damselflies. Butterflies also thrive on the common, with elusive species including purple emperors and silver-studded blues. The area is also noted for several varieties of carnivorous plants. Rare breed cattle such as belted Galloway are used to graze this wet ground. The cattle will help reduce encroaching scrub and overly dominating rough grasses such as purple moor grass.

The event is free and open to all reasonably fit walkers. This 4 mile walk is very flat and easy, with no stiles. Dogs are welcome on the walk and pub.

Meet us at Moat Car Park, Thursley, GU8 6LW (Grid ref: SU899416) at 10.30am for an 11.00 am prompt start and a 12.30pm finish. We will end the walk with an optional drink/lunch at the Woolpack pub, Elstead.
