From Reigate Town to the Heath and back

6th June 2021, 11:00 - 14:00

                           Sunday 6 June 2021

Start time: Assemble 10.30 for 11.00 start
                          Finish time: 1.00 –1.30

From our meeting point, we will walk through the beautiful and historic Priory Park and follow footpaths to Reigate Heath with stunning views of the North Downs throughout the walk.

Reigate Heath is an extremely interesting area of public land, which also has a golf course. Walkers and golfers have to respect each other.

The Heath was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England in 1955. This heathland is the largest example in East Surrey consisting of lowland heath, dry acid grassland, alder woodland (known as ‘alder carr’) and recent secondary woodland which all support their own special and characteristic species. The history of the heath dates back over 4000 years.

As an additional point of interest, we will visit the windmill on the Heath which houses a church! This is a very unique building and we hope very much to be able to see inside but this will depend on arrangements in place at the time associated with the pandemic.

If time permits we will also see some of the Bronze Age Tumulus.

The walk is approximately 5 miles with a small number of short hills. There are no styles but there are a few steps. The going underfoot may be uneven at times and there is a possibility of mud.

Suitable clothing for the weather conditions on the day is essential along with stout walking shoes.  It is recommended that participants carry fluids with them on the walk.

This walk is not suitable for members with mobility challenges or pushchairs but children able to walk up to 5 miles are welcome.

Well behaved dogs on short leads are welcome.

We will give you more detailed joining instructions once your booking is confirmed and nearer the time.

On returning to Reigate town, there are many options for refreshment including restaurants and pubs. The most obvious is the café (Pistachios in the Park) located in the park where you can get coffee, drinks and snacks.

You should not attend if you are feeling unwell or show any COVID-19 symptoms and, if you need to cancel, please let us know.  If government advice alters prior to the event, we may implement changes or cancellation at short notice.

At this time we are taking online or telephone bookings only. We are currently not able to accept postal bookings.  Enquiries please contact us at info@surreyhillssociety.org or on mobile 07530 949302.
