Goldstone Farm forms part of the Polesden Lacey estate and is one of the few family run dairy farms remaining within the Surrey Hills. The Gray family have farmed here since 1929 with the current occupants being the third generation to work it. Ayrshires have been at Goldstone Farm since John Gray introduced them to Surrey in 1943 and they currently milk 120 pedigree Ayrshire cows.
In common with many Surrey farmers, the Gray’s have had to diversify in order to keep the farm viable for future generations. In their case, production of “gelato” has become a very successful product and can be found in a number of local retail and refreshment outlets.
Our visit will provide an insight into dairy farming in the area – including an extended tractor / trailer tour of the farm. We will also discover more about gelato production using their own local raw materials. Please note that for food hygiene reasons we will not be allowed to go inside the dairy unit where the gelato is made. We will have the opportunity to see the milking taking place (starting at 4.00pm) and our hosts are also, very kindly, providing tea and cakes to round off our afternoon.
Since the tour will include a tractor / trailer tour, a degree of mobility is required to mount / dismount. If this could affect you, please let us know at the time of booking. It should also be noted that this is a working dairy farm so cattle smells and dung will be in evidence during the afternoon.
This event is not suitable for dogs or children under 12.
The cost of the event is £10 for members and £12 for non-members and includes refreshments.
