Guildford Walkfest Launch and Walk from The Hive

Start time: 10.30am for official launch.
11am start of walk
Finish time: 1pm

Join our Vice President, Ken Bare (who is also the Coordinator of Guildford Walkfest) for the official launch of Guildford Walkfest 2023 followed by a walk led by local historian David Rose.

The launch activities will commence at 10.30am at The Hive – a Community Hub located in Park Barn (not far from the Royal Surrey County Hospital) – in the presence of the Mayor of Guildford. There will be the traditional ribbon cutting and brief speeches and a chance to learn more about The Hive.

Everyone booking is welcome to join this part of the event. Refreshments are available (at your own cost) in the café just inside The Hive.

At approximately 11.00am, all of those present who wish to take part on the walk will set off.

This is David Rose’s local area and his knowledge of its ancient and modern history is immense. As he leads our group along, he will provide details of Guildford’s medieval royal deer park while passing the site of a royal hunting lodge of which parts of its moat remain. He will point out the site where, in 1952, a US Army Airforce F-86A Sabre aircraft crashed after a mid-air collision at 24,000ft with a RAF Meteor F8 aircraft during a military exercise. Add in details of the Roman farmstead that was on Broadstreet Common and you will understand why we are so pleased to have David as our leader.

This 3.9-mile walk is on easy paths but, as with any walk, good walking shoes are recommended. Please bring rain coats if appropriate, wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water if it’s hot.

ThIs event is not suitable for children and/or pushchairs or those with mobility challenges.

Obedient dogs on leads are welcome.
