Dorking sits on the greensand between the chalk of the North Downs and the clay of the Weald in a key position where east-west routes intersect with the passage of the river Mole through the chalk hills. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Dorkinges. It has had many famous residents through the years such as Laurence Olivier and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The church has one of the highest spires in south east England and is at the centre of a conservation area in the town. West Street is commonly known as antique street and many of the buildings there are very old, including William Mullins’ house which is the only known surviving home of a Pilgrim Father.

These are just a few of the interesting facts that our tour guides, volunteers at the Museum, could tell us about the town.

We will be guided in small groups to comply with the regulations in place for Covid.

The walk is not over a great distance, but it will take about 1 ½ hours with stopping points and there are some inclines involved. It is almost entirely on paved surfaces. We will be outdoors and so it is important to wear suitable clothing and footwear for the prevailing weather conditions.

Children could come along but the event is not intended for them and as it is a town walk, it is not appropriate for dogs.

We are not organising any refreshments for the group, but the town has many cafes if required.

The cost of this event will be £6 for members and £8 for non-members.

This event must be booked in advance so we can limit numbers for everyone’s safety.  We will comply with Government guidelines and social distancing measures will be adhered to throughout the visit.   You should not attend if you are feeling unwell or show any COVID-19 symptoms and if you need to cancel please let us know.

By continuing and making a booking you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to the Terms & Conditions specified in our Cancellation Policy and Responsibility Statement, both of which can be viewed by clicking here
