In the Footsteps of the Famous Four Guildford Names

4th February 2026, 02:45 - 04:45

A talk by Jeff Thomson entitled

‘In the Footsteps of the Famous Four Guildford Names’

on

Wednesday 4 February 2026

2.45pm – 4.45pm

at

Albury Village Hall, GU5

What better way to spend a potentially dull February afternoon than come and listen to a knowledgeable speaker talking about famous people associated with Surrey and especially Guildford.

The first two linked characters are Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and a pioneer in the development of computers, and Alan Turing – both mathematical geniuses who lived ‘spectacular’ lives.

The third was a well-known resident of Guildford – Lewis Carroll. The statue of Alice through the Looking Glass which is in the Castle grounds in Guildford is close to the house where he spent the last part of his life. He was far more than just a writer of fantasy fiction.

The fourth is Archbishop George Abbott. Jeff Thomson, our speaker, will suggest that he had a profound influence on English history. Will you agree?

Jeff is a journalist with a weekly column on local Arts news in the Surrey Advertiser – this is approaching its tenth year. He is additonally a regular broadcaster for BBC Radio; in 2025 he could be heard on BBC Radio Four – BBC Radio 5 Live – BBC Radio Sussex – BBC Radio Surrey – commenting and contributing to Arts issues. He has been a Guildford Town Guide for 9 years.

The hall at Albury will open at 2.30pm and the talk will begin at 2.45.

Tea/coffee and delicious cake will be served after the talk and is included in the cost of your ticket.
