12th June 2018, 15:00 - 18:00
We are delighted to have been invited to make a further visit to Goddards (the last was in 2016) by the owners, the Lutyens Trust. Approached by deeply sunken lanes that are almost tunnels through the wooded landscape, Goddards was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1898-1900. It was not originally conceived as a family house, but was built as a “Home of Rest to which ladies of slender means might repair for a holiday” for Sir Frederick Mirrielees, a wealthy business man who became head of Currie & Co, merchant bankers.
After being used for invalid soldiers during the Boer War, it was later extended by Lutyens in 1910 and converted into a family home. It is Lutyens’s first symmetrical Arts and Crafts house, notable in particular for his subtle handling of materials and colours.
The gardens were designed by Lutyens’s friend and collaborator, Gertrude Jekyll and are well preserved and maintained. In particular, the courtyard garden has been restored using Gertrude Jekyll’s original planting plans.
The visit will commence with an introduction by a member of the Trust followed by a guided tour of the house and garden after which an afternoon tea will be available. There will then be ample time to study the extensive collection of Lutyens and Arts and Crafts related books in the Library and to play a game of skittles in the integral skittle alley, a unique feature of this remarkable house.
The cost will be £18 per member which includes a donation to the Lutyens Trust and all catering and other costs. Please note that because of the limitation on numbers the visit to this fascinating house is only available for members. This event is not suitable for children or dogs.
