This event will feature a special lecture in the Old Saxon Church at Albury on the current Surrey Archaeological Society (SyAS) excavations at Albury Park to investigate the deserted medieval settlement which once stretched across the banks of the Tillingbourne. This will coincide with an open day of test pits in the park, featuring finds and displays of material already uncovered, as well as a chance to view the terraced gardens designed by John Evelyn, which are not normally open to the public.

The original medieval settlement and manor of Albury, in Albury Park, is well-known for its displacement by the local lord(s) of the manor in the late 18th and early 19th century and re-location a kilometre away, to the present-day village, formerly the manor of Weston. Although map evidence gives us some idea as to the extent of the early modern cottages spread along the southern banks of the Tillingbourne and course of the former road to Shere, little is known of its earlier history, including evidence of medieval activity beyond its Domesday ‘Old Saxon’ church and mill.

With the help of geophysical survey, LiDAR and – of course – a large-scale series of test pits spread across the site, SyAS have been working to uncover and learn more about the original settlement since 2023, which now includes extensive Roman activity! Come along and hear about the project and view the remains of one of Surrey’s most infamous deserted settlements.

The first part of the afternoon will be self-guided as you visit the dig itself and the displays of earlier finds and see the gardens. The talk will take place at 4.00 pm in the church which in itself is well worth a visit.

Once you have had a good look around at the dig and the gardens, you will make your way back to the church where a cup of tea/coffee will be available – or if we are lucky with the weather, perhaps something cold.

Apart from the talk, the event is outside so you should wear appropriate clothing for the prevailing weather conditions.

This event is not suitable for children or dogs. For those with mobility issues, the church and the talk are accessible but visiting the dig may be challenging.

The cost to include tea and coffee will be for members £8.50 and non-members £10.
