Tree identification walk in Shamley Green

23rd July 2018, 10:30 - 12:30

Join local tree expert, Pamela Holt for a guided tour around this quintessentially English village, near Guildford.  Pamela will be pointing out trees of particular interest and giving tips on how best to identify common trees of the Surrey Hills. Our Chairman, Chris Howard will also be there to point out historic buildings and other points of interest, as well as giving an insight into the social history of the village.

The event will start at the doggie friendly Bricklayers Arms for coffee at 10.30am, and quick talk on Shamley Green. A relatively new village, the church only being built in 1864, it nestles around a picturesque cricket green, with an unusual boundary, straddling the main road and pub garden!

In 2013, BBC 2 featured Shamley Green in the Horizon episode ‘The Secret Life of the Cat’, stating that the village has the highest density feline population in the United Kingdom.

Some of the famous residents of the village have included Harry Secombe from ‘The Goons’, Alfred Hitchcock, the film Director, Tony Hart, the children’s TV presenter and artist, and was the childhood home of Richard Branson, founder of Virgin. It was also once home to the illustrator of A A Milne’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’, E H Shepard.

The walk will be slow and on flat ground with no stiles. It will go ahead regardless of the weather, so bring appropriate raincoats if wet weather is forecast. We will be mainly walking on the grass common or on pavements, so we do not anticipate much mud. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

The inclusive cost will be £7.00 for members, and £8.00 for non-members, which includes coffee/tea on arrival, the tour and talk. At the end of the morning’s activities there is an optional lunch or drink at the Bricklayers pub. Please indicate in the ‘Comment’ box of the online booking form, if you plan to join for lunch and remember to order your food on arrival on the day.
