1st May 2021, 14:30 - 16:30
Brookwood Cemetery, located in the heart of Surrey, is a beautiful Grade 1 listed site in the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens and has been serving the community since 1854. The 220 acre park provides a tranquil, picturesque setting. The grounds are divided into many smaller plots by a multitude of roads and avenues that boast magnificent trees and offer a wealth of flora and fauna as well as local heritage. The site is rich in architecture, ecology, horticulture and history, with many famous people being buried there, including the American artist John Singer Sargent, crime fiction writer, Dennis Yeats Wheatley, Horatia Nelson, the granddaughter of Admiral Horatio Nelson and Emma Hamilton and many, many more, late 19th & early 20th century VIPs.
We will visit some of the wonderful Mausoleums including the newly restored Colquhoun Mausoleum designed by John Johnson in a Gothic Revival style and the Grade II Listed Vickers Memorial, founders of the aviation company of the same name, based at Weybridge.
We will be welcomed by Shahid Azeem, the outgoing High Sheriff of Surrey as part of the celebrations for Surrey Day. Shahid is an award-winning British–Pakistani entrepreneur who is Chairman of the Woking Asian Business Forum and Chair of Aldershot Football Club. He is also MD of two Surrey based IT companies. He was named one of the top 100 most influential Muslims in the UK in a recent survey by Royal Bank of Scotland. Woking is home to the first purpose built mosque in the UK and several of Queen Victoria’s staff worshipped there.
We will be accompanied by volunteers from the Brookwood Cemetery Society, a charity set up in 1992 to preserve, research and educate people about this important site.
The event will be socially distanced in groups of 5 plus a dedicated guide and we will give you more detailed joining instructions once your booking is confirmed and nearer the time.
This event is not designed for children but they are welcome to join us. This is a flat route and there is a wheelchair accessible option. Only assistance dogs are permitted into the Cemetery.
