           Butterfly Walk near

           Netley House, Shere

                  12 June 2021

                     Start time: 10:30
                     Finish time: 13:00

Netley House is set in the beautiful Netley Park – an 18th Century gentleman’s estate nestling into the North Downs. The house is a Grade II listed building and is owned by the National Trust, although it is not open to the public. During the First World War the house was used as a hospital and in the Second World War it was occupied by the Canadian Army. We will be able to see the mansion from the footpaths running through the parkland, but our primary purpose is to visit the conservation work carried out by the Small Blue Stepping Stones project, which has been led by Butterfly Conservation, working closely with the National Trust, Surrey Wildlife Trust, Guildford Borough Council and other landowners.

The Small Blue is the UK’s smallest resident butterfly and its UK distribution has significantly declined since the 1970’s. It is entirely reliant on a sole food plant, Kidney Vetch. A number of conservation projects have been carried out in Surrey and the Netley Park conservation work aims to link populations around Guildford with the population further East at Guildford.

Simon Riley is an experienced butterfly enthusiast who was a leading volunteer on the original Stepping Stones Project and continues to be actively involved. We will enjoy a 2 to 2 ½ hour walk of about 3 miles from nearby Shere, exploring the parkland. We hope to see a number of butterfly species during our walk including possibly, but not guaranteed, the Small Blue. Our pace will be slow and there will be frequent stops to enjoy the natural beauty of this area.

Cost to Members: £5
Cost to Non-members: £8

This event would be fine for older supervised children and obedient dogs are welcome provided they are on a lead.  Appropriate footwear is recommended and please dress according to weather conditions. Please bring plenty of water.
