Discover Waverley House and Abbey

Thursday 23 September 2021
2.30pm – 4.30pm

Join us for a rare opportunity to visit Waverley House, a Grade 2 listed Georgian mansion set against the backdrop of the stunning ruins of Waverley Abbey. Home to Cistercian monks from 1128, it’s another one of the Surrey Hills’ hidden gems.

The house is only open to the public by appointment, so this is a rare opportunity to visit this site. It is currently owned by CWR, a faith–based charity that builds bridge between belief and behaviour in everyday life and relationships. They run a variety of courses from the house as well as take bookings for business conferences and meetings. CWR are renovating the house and gardens to their former glory.

Following a welcome by the Mayor of Farnham, there will be a tour of the house followed by afternoon tea.

Unfortunately, due to the age of the house, the whole of the event is not accessible to wheelchairs, however you can call to discuss options.

There will then be an opportunity to visit the Abbey ruins.

Waverley Abbey ruins were the 2016 film set for the re-make of “The Mummy” film, starring Tom Cruise and Rachel Weisz. Also used in “Elizabeth” in 1998 and “Into the Woods” Disney film in 2014, among others, due to its picturesque location. It is also believed to be the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott’s novel “Waverley” after he visited the Nicholson family who owned the estate. Famous Victorian nurse, Florence Nightingale was a relative and regular visitor to the house, which became a military hospital for officers during WW1.

This event is open to members and non-members but must be booked in advance. The event is not suitable for children or dogs.

The cost, which includes a tour, talk and afternoon cream tea is:
Members: £12.00
Non-members: £17.00

Gluten free cream tea option available –  please request in the comments box when booking your ticket.

Please bring stout shoes for walking over rough ground around the ruins and dress for the prevailing weather conditions.

At this time we are taking online or telephone bookings only. We will give you more detailed joining instructions once your booking is confirmed and nearer the time.
