Guided tour of Goddards house and gardens

Monday 10 June 2024

10.30am – 3pm

We are delighted to offer another visit to Goddards, the last was in 2018, by the owners, the Lutyens Trust.

Approached by deeply sunken lanes that are almost tunnels through the wooded landscape, Goddards was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1898-1900. It was not originally conceived as a family house, but was built as a “Home of Rest to which ladies of slender means might repair for a holiday” for Sir Frederick Mirrielees, a wealthy business man who became head of Currie & Co, merchant bankers.

After being used for invalid soldiers during the Boer War, it was later extended by Lutyens in 1910 and converted into a family home. It is Lutyens’s first symmetrical Arts and Crafts house, notable in particular for his subtle handling of materials and colours.

The gardens were designed by Lutyens’s friend and collaborator, Gertrude Jekyll and are well preserved and maintained. In particular, the courtyard garden has been restored using Gertrude Jekyll’s original planting plans.

The visit will commence with tea/coffee on arrival.  We will then be given an introduction by a member of the Trust.  The group will then split into two groups, one group will tour the house whlist the other will have a guided tour of the garden.

There will then be ample time to study the extensive collection of Lutyens and Arts and Crafts related books in the Library and to play a game of skittles in the integral skittle alley, a unique feature of this remarkable house.

The cost will be £18 for members and £20 for non-members.  This cost includes all refreshments and a donation to the Lutyens Trust.

Please note that numbers are restricted, so please book as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.

This event is not designed for children and no dogs this time please.

Deadline for booking is 5 June 2024.
