Impressive Titsey Place – FULL

5th September 2018, 14:15 - 16:45

Titsey Place in Oxted is an impressive manor house with beautiful gardens set in the stunning countryside of the North Downs.  The House and Gardens are held in Charitable Trust and open to the public at set times. We will have the opportunity to visit the house with a guide, get access to the church and a chance to wander round the magnificent gardens.  A cream tea will be served at the end of the afternoon.

The house dates back to the 16th century. The interior was designed by William Atkinson, and is especially noted for its fine collection of family portraits from such noted artists as Sir Joshua Reynolds and Peter Lely, stunning paintings of Venice by Canaletto, the panelled sitting room and the gallery bedroom.

The gardens have always been a particular feature of Titsey Place. The upper terrace is the perfect place to enjoy the long views across the Darent valley which extends to the beginnings of the South Downs. The walled kitchen garden, restored in 1996, is an illustration of Victorian horticultural techniques. There is also a central conservatory house with a wide range of colourful exotic plants and orchids. We will also enjoy the formal rose gardens, lakes and stream which provide such a fine context to Titsey Place itself.

We will assemble at 2.15 pm for the tours to begin at 2.30 pm. One group will start with the house tour which will take approximately an hour, while another group will take a self-guided tour of the gardens and visit the nearby church belonging to the estate. At 3.30pm the groups will swap and at 4.30pm we’ll gather altogether to the Tea Room situated in the old dairy buildings to savour a delicious afternoon tea.

The cost will be £19 per member (£21 non-member), which will include entrance fee, guided tour and cream tea.

The house is accessible to all, although wheelchair access has to be arranged in advance. Please let us know as soon as possible, if this is required.  The church is situated on the other side of a rather busy road, and so will not be easy to reach for those with mobility issues.  The visit is not suitable for children or dogs.
