Launch of Guildford Walkfest – walk on Whitmoor Common

2nd September 2017, 10:30 - 13:00

Join the Chairman of Surrey Hills Society, Chris Howard and the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Nigel Manning, to launch the start of Guildford 11th walking festival.  The event is kindly sponsored by Guildford Borough Council, Experience Guildford and Bevan Wilson Physiotherapist and Sports Injury Clinics, who will all be there to launch this month long festival of walking in and around Guildford Borough. Following coffee and official launch by the Mayor, join us on an easy flat, 5-mile walk around adjacent Whitmoor Common and optional lunch afterwards at Jolly Farmer pub. Come and explore this less well known area just outside Guildford, which has some surprising hidden treasures.

Worplesdon is derived from the old English word “werpels”, meaning a bridleway and “dun” meaning a hill. The area has been inhabited for 3-4000 years. Two bronze-age barrows were excavated by General Pitt-Rivers in 1877. The bronze–age burial urns that were found there are now in the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. Whitmoor Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is managed by The Whitmoor Common Association and Surrey Wildlife Trust.

Guildford’s Walking Festival is now in its 11th year.  It is run entirely by volunteers and involves many local organisations and charities that all support this event to celebrate the wonderful walks around Guildford and some of the history and other interesting things happening around the area.  There is one short, one medium and one long walk every day for the whole of September.  Further info on www.guildfordwalkfest.co.uk.

Meet us at Whitmoor Common free car park next to Jolly Farmer Pub, GU3 3RN, Grid ref:  SU987542 at 10.30am for 11.00am prompt start and a 1.00pm finish. At the end the walk join us at Jolly Farmer Pub. Dogs are welcome on the walk.
