It has become a tradition that the Society does this walk on the first weekend in December.

Many of our members tell us it gets them into the festive mood for the coming season. In the past the walk has always been based at Belmont School, which sadly closed last winter. Therefore, this year our retired President, Neil Maltby and wife Jane have kindly offered their home as a base. It is in the same area but this time we will walk to the summit of nearby Leith Hill rather than Holmbury Hill.

Leith Hill is the highest point in the south of England and has an interesting 18th century tower at the top, which was built by the then owner of Leith Hill Place, Richard Hull in 1764-65. The area is now owned and managed by the National Trust.

This walk is classed as Moderate and will take about an hour and a half (2.5 miles).  It has one strenuous climb to the summit up a steep flight of uneven steps but after that the walk has a couple of more gentle gradients but only fully fit walkers should attempt this walk.

If you are not walking and have family or friends who are, you are welcome to join us at 12 noon for mulled wine and mince pies – please book the refreshments only option on the booking form.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.

This walk is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Cost to Members: £5.00 and Non-members: £7.00 which includes mulled wine and a mince pie.
