SHS Hedge Planting Day

23rd February 2022, 10:00 - 13:00

Surrey Hills Society Hedge Planting Day
Wednesday 23rd February 2022
10am – 1:00 pm

Come and join our Chairman, Gordon Jackson and Christa Emmett, our Project and Volunteer Coordinator to help plant hedges at Manor Farm in Wotton.

Hedgerow planting is a great way to enjoy the beautiful Surrey Hills landscape and is a fun activity suitable for individuals, families and friends.

Manor Farm is a 3,000 acre family run farm, situated between Dorking and Guildford in the Surrey Hills. Paula and Laurence Matthews, who run the farm are aiming to plant 4.5km of hedgerow, helping to increase biodiversity and connectivity throughout the farming landscape.

This project has been made possible due to the support of the Surrey Hills Trust Fund and the Surrey Hills FiPL (Farming in Protected Landscapes) grant, funded by Defra. We are working in partnership with Surrey Choices, who give volunteering and employment opportunities to adults with learning disabilities and are assisting with hedgerow planting projects across the Surrey Hills. Find out more about Surrey Choices here:

Paula will tell us how the new hedgerows will improve biodiversity on the farm and benefit from being outside in the fresh air. The hedgerows will contain a mix of native tree species and will provide food throughout the seasons which help to support much-loved species such as the hazel dormouse, hedgehog and barn owl. As well as providing food, hedgerows act as important wildlife corridors, helping wildlife to travel safely across the landscape. Some of the hedgerow plants that we will be planting are Hawthorn, Crab Apple, Hazel, Spindle and Field Maple.
