3rd April 2024, 11:00 - 12:30

A Private Visit to Guildford Museum
and talk by the Curators of Secret Guildford
Wednesday 3 April 2024
11am – 12.30pm

We will visit Guildford Museum where we will be introduced to the permanent exhibitions and a new temporary exhibition highlighting the work and agents of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War.

We are delighted that the curator of Secret Guildford, Carol Brown will be present to give a personal introduction to the displays, which she has co-curated with the Secret WW2 Learning Network.

Guildford Museum is formed of four main buildings, with various smaller additions. These buildings, Castle Arch House, 48 Quarry Street, the gallery extension and the Muniment Room, date from the mid-16th century to the 1920s.

Castle Arch House is partly built using the walls from the gatehouse to the castle. The sheriff of Guildford Castle built the gatehouse in 1256. You can still see the remains of the arch that was part of the gateway.

Secret Guildford

Violette Szabó

Yvonne Cormeau

Find out about the agents trained at Wanborough Manor, and Winterfold, outside Cranleigh. People may have heard of famous agents like Violette Szabó and Odette Hallowes. In this exhibition, you’ll discover the stories of more of the brave secret agents who deserve to have their stories told.

People like: Captain Willie Grover-Williams, a Grand Prix champion who had raced at Brooklands; Yvonne Cormeau, one of the most successful wireless operators. She sent over three hundred messages from occupied France; and Brian Stonehouse, an artist who survived five concentration camps.

Due to limited space we will be divided into two groups for the tour and come together for refreshments in the Discovery Lounge from about 12:00 to 12:30 pm. Thereafter you will be free to revisit the displays for as long as you wish.

The museum is not fully accessible but many parts can be accessed. For full information see
