Visit to Nower Wood Nature Education Centre

26th March 2019, 10:00 - 11:30

Join our Vice President Chris Howard, on this visit to Surrey Wildlife Trust’s new Nower Wood building and private Nature Reserve in Leatherhead. This modern facility replaced the out-dated, leaking wooden huts from the 1970s, which the Surrey Hills Society visited in 2015. The building and surrounding countryside is now much more accessible for those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Since opening on 20th April 2017, the £1.2m flagship learning centre has helped SWT grow its efforts to educate and inspire people of all ages about wildlife. The building has already welcomed over 10,000 visitors – 3000 more annual visitors than before the rebuild.

Construction of the new facilities was made possible by generous donations from the Trust members, businesses, and the public, on top of a £360,000 Heritage Lottery Fund. The building was opened by HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO and is equipped with cutting-edge teaching technology like video microscopes and interactive screens. The centre’s design includes various features to minimise its environmental impact, such as cladding made of locally sourced, sustainable timber; solar panels on the roof; and a biomass boiler that uses recycled wood pellets.

Nestling in over 80 acres of ancient woodland with some interesting ponds, the tour of this private woodland and centre will highlight some of the ways the Wildlife Trust uses the centre to engage young people with wildlife and the countryside.

The cost will be £10.00 for members, and £11.00 for non-members, which includes coffee/tea & biscuits on arrival, the tour and talk. At the end of the morning’s activities there is an optional lunch or drink at the Cock Inn, Headley. Please indicate if you plan to join us for lunch.

Booking is essential. If you would like to join us, please book your space online at the bottom of the page or complete and return the downloadable slip below before Monday 18th March 2019.
