Join local historian and writer David Rose on a walk to see some of Guildford’s lesser known history including an ancient footpath to the former medieval royal deer park and The Mount.

With plenty of stops along the way to look at the history of the area, this 4.5 mile walk starts with what may well be a very ancient path. We will see an old cast-in footpath sign saying: ‘To Farnham Road’. Existing parts of this public footpath lead to Farnham Road and The Mount. Leaving the path, we walk towards Royal Surrey County Hospital, cross the playing fields of the University of Surrey’s Manor Farm campus to the scheduled ancient monument site of what was a medieval royal hunting lodge within Guildford’s enclosed deer park. We then head south across a footbridge above the A3 towards Manor Way in Onslow Village. So many road names hereabouts relate to the ancient deer park!

Then a steep uphill climb via a footpath, across the A31 Farnham Road to the fields west of The Mount. We walk across the fields (superb views that include the London skyline), taking a path back down and across the A31, past another old cast-iron footpath sign, and pick up the previously mentioned ‘ancient path’. It’s then mostly downhill beside Onslow Village, back past Guildford Cathedral and the entrance to the University of Surrey’s Stag Hill campus, under the A3 beside the railway line and along Southway to where the walk started.

Good walking shoes are recommended and wearing long trousers at this time of year as there are lots of nettles and brambles.  Please bring rain coats if appropriate, wear sunscreen and bring plently of water if it’s hot.

ThIs event is not suitable for children and/or pushchairs or those with mobility challenges.

Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

Meeting point: Slip road parallel to Southway, Westborough, Guildford, near the junction with the A323 Aldershot Road. The slip road is opposite Westborough United Reformed Church in Southway, whose postcode is GU2 8DA.
