Celebrating the North Downs Way as part of Surrey Day

4th May 2019, 11:00 - 14:00

Join the Vice President of Surrey Hills Society Chris Howard, on this 4 mile (6.4km) linear walk from Guildford to Chilworth via St Martha’s Chapel as part of the Surrey Day celebrations. Surrey Day is a joint initiative of BBC Radio, Surrey Life magazine and Visit Surrey to celebrate what makes our beautiful Surrey special. If you visit the Visit Surrey website, there are lots of fun activities taking place across the County with some good discounts and free offers as well. For more details see www.visitsurrey.com/whats-on/surrey-day.

The North Downs Way (NDW) National Trail offers 153 miles (246km) of spectacular scenery, picturesque villages and glorious rolling countryside, passing through the Surrey Hills and Kent Downs Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The route runs from Farnham in the west of the county through Guildford, Dorking and Reigate and on to Oxted. It then travels along this ancient chalk ridge to Canterbury and Dover.

There is a dedicated team looking after the NDW. The Trail is funded by Natural England and Kent and Surrey County Councils. The Public Rights of Way Teams in Kent and Surrey look after the physical maintenance of the path. The NDW is one of the 15 National Trails in England and Wales. They are all waymarked with a distinctive acorn symbol.

While on the walk, we will take time to discover the ruins of the once-famous Chilworth Gunpowder Mills. This factory site was in use from Tudor times until just after World War One. St Martha-on-the-Hill church was possibly a stopping-off point for pilgrims during the Middle Ages, on their way to Canterbury Cathedral.

The event is free and open to all moderately fit walkers, but please book your place at the bottom of this page. The walk has several steep hills but no stiles. Appropriate footwear, weatherproof clothing and plenty of water are essential. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome on the walk, as it is bird breeding season. Children under 18 years must be supervised.

Meet us at the Guildford Town Bridge, near White House pub, 8 High Street GU2 4AJ (nearest parking is Farnham Road Car Park and Railway Station is Guildford) from 10.30am for 11.00 am prompt start and an approx. finish around 2.00pm in Chilworth, where there is a regular train service back to Guildford. We’d be delighted to have you join us afterwards at The Percy Arms Pub, Chilworth.
