Explore Leatherhead
Sunday 6 February 2022
Meet in the centre of Leatherhead
at 10.30 am for a prompt 11am start
Approx finish at 1.00pm

Come along to enjoy a relatively short, flat walk around this important and picturesque town in the Surrey Hills. We will take in many hidden and important historical buildings and part of the walk will be alongside the River Mole.

War Memorial – Peter Trimming

Leatherhead was an important administrative centre as long ago as Saxon times and the church of St Mary and St Nicholas dates back to around the 11th Century. The church will be opened up for an exclusive visit for the Society and you may want to provide a donation to the church for their hospitality.

Edward Lear was an inhabitant of Leatherhead who penned his classic poem “The Owl and the Pussycat”. Jane Austin often visited members of her family in nearby Bookham and it is believed that Highbury, the fictitious town in “Emma”, was based on Leatherhead. The famous Leatherhead theatre is in the centre of the town which has shown professional and amateur theatre productions since 1969.

The event is free and open to all reasonably fit walkers but is not really designed for buggies or wheelchairs.

Well behaved dogs are welcome on the walk but as some of it is through the town centre by busy roads, dogs will always need to be on leads. Children would be welcome but is not designed as a children’s event.

The walk should take no longer than 2 hours but it will depend on the size and speed of the group. The walk will be guided at all times.  Stout foot wear is recommended and weather appropriate clothing is suggested.
