We are delighted to have arranged a visit to Ramster Garden which nestles in a fold of the Surrey Hills near Chiddingfold.  Famous for its stunning spring colour, with over 25 acres of woodland, views of lakes and hillsides, Ramster is also one of the best places in Surrey to see autumn colour.  The unique 100-year-old avenue of maples, woodland areas with oak and larch, acers and American red gum tree Liquidambar provide a spectacular show of orange, crimson and purple autumn shades.

The foundations of the present garden were first laid out in the 1890s by Sir Harry Waechter (later High Sheriff of Surrey) who created it out of the oak woodland, helped by Gauntletts Nurseries of Chiddingfold, whose interest in Japanese plants and ornaments can still be seen today in features such as the stone lanterns, the cranes, now happily feeding in the pond, the clumps of bamboo, the masses of evergreen azaleas and the avenue of maples.

In 1922 Sir Henry and Lady Norman purchased Ramster. Lady Norman was the daughter of Lord and Lady Aberconway and a keen horticulturist who greatly added to the garden at Ramster.  In 1927 the garden was first opened for the National Gardens Scheme and remains one of the few original gardens still open.

Today Ramster is a flourishing garden with new projects, plantings and improvements being undertaken every year making it ideal for an autumn visit.

We will meet at the garden at 10.30 am for tea/coffee and cakes and will then be free to explore the garden at our leisure.

The cost will be £14 for members and £16 for non-members.

This event is not suitable for children or dogs.  Some of the stone paths are uneven and the garden is not suitable for wheelchairs.  Stout footwear and weather appropriate clothing are recommended.
