Chaldon and its Hidden Treasures

Friday 9 June 2023

2pm – 5pm

A wonderful opportunity to hear a talk by Ted Howard on the mural in Chaldon Church of the ‘Ladder of Salvation of the Human Soul’ together with ‘Purgatory and Hell’ and to visit the church itself, and to hear about and visit the adjacent 14th Century Chaldon Court by kind invitation of its owner, Mrs Madeline Hutchins.

The picture on the west wall of the church is famous as the earliest known English wall painting – it dates from about 1200 and is without equal in any other part of Europe. It is thought to have been painted by a travelling artist-monk with an extensive knowledge of Greek ecclesiastical art. The picture depicts the ‘Ladder of Salvation of the Human Soul’ together with ‘Purgatory and Hell’. Wall paintings of this kind were intended as a visual aid to religious teaching and they provide a wide philosophical background to such studies.

The second half of the afternoon will be conducted by Madeline Hutchins who will give an illustrated talk on the history of her home, the 14th century Chaldon Court, adjacent to the church and will very kindly allow us to visit the property which is not normally open to the public. The house has been very carefully restored to retain its historic features and Madeline will explain how this was done during the visit.

We will divide into two groups so that one group will hear the talk in the church first while the other visits Chaldon Court and then we will swop over.

The afternoon will be rounded off by tea either in the garden of Chaldon Court if the weather allows or in the church. When booking please let us know in the comments box if you have any particular dietary requirements.

The house is not suitable for those with mobility issues.

Cost to Members: £10
Cost to Non-members: £14

The cost of this event includes a donation to the church to help with the maintenance of the mural.
