Join Dr Frazer Coomber who leads on the National Harvest Mouse Nest Survey for an online training session on how to find harvest mice nests.

Join Dr Frazer Coomber, from The Mammal Society, for our first wildlife survey training session under the Surrey Hills Conservation Volunteers Scheme.

Surrey Hills National Landscape and Surrey Hills Society are working together to facilitate a Surrey Hills Conservation Volunteer scheme. Surrey Hills Conservation Volunteers undertake conservation and access work across the Surrey Hills National Landscape, managing access and habitats for people and nature.

Frazer leads nationally on the National Harvest Mouse Survey and will be providing an online training session for volunteers to learn how to survey for nests.

On the Red List for Britain’s Mammals, the harvest mouse is classified as Near Threatened in Britain. This means that they are at risk of becoming threatened with extinction in the near future. Unfortunately, we do not have good estimates of how many harvest mice there are in the wild, so we really have no idea how bad their situation is or what sort of conservation actions should be put in place.

This is why the Mammal Society have launched the National Harvest Mouse Survey across the United Kingdom. They are looking for people across the UK who can get outside and look for harvest mice nests! Surveys do not take long and no prior experience or specialist equipment is required to carry them out.
Frazer will cover topics such as where to look for nests, how to survey and how to collect and record data.

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
