Dorking – the one time home of Ralph Vaughan Williams

Sunday 2 October 2022
at 10.30 am for a prompt 11am start
Approx finish at 1.30pm

We will take an unusual walk around Dorking, probably to parts you do not know. We will see some of the points of interest relating to RVW’s association with the town and briefly follow the Greensand Way.

We will meet outside the Dorking Halls where there is a statue of Ralph Vaughan Williams and also the home of the Leith Hill Music Festival which he founded. From here, our walk will last about 1 ½ to 2 hours taking us to unusual parts of the town and into the countryside around.

The walk is mainly on paths, some paved and some not, so strong, non-slip footwear is recommended. There are some short, steep inclines up and down involved but no stiles. There is one short section which is on a narrow unpaved path heading steeply downhill.

This is an outdoor event so please wear suitable clothing for the prevailing weather conditions.

Well behaved dogs on a lead could join the walk, although some of the walk is in the town. Children who are used to walking might also enjoy it.

No refreshments are included in this event so you may wish to bring a drink with you.  The café in the Dorking Halls where we start and finish will be open as well as various options in the town if you are looking for refreshments.

Deadline for booking 28 September 2022.

Any enquiries please contact us at info@surreyhillssociety.org.
