Rhododendrons at Ramster Gardens

8th May 2019, 11:00 - 13:30

Nestling in the south-west corner of the Surrey Hills, Ramster Gardens are truly a hidden gem. Opening their gates for a spring season (and again briefly to show their autumn colour) the owners welcome us to explore the grounds and enjoy the multitude of flowers, shrubs and trees.

Created early in the 20th century from oak woodland, the gardens include mature trees as well as wonderful rhododendron and azalea displays. Spring wouldn’t be spring without carpets of bluebells and everything has that wonderful fresh green of newly opened leaves. Like all good gardens, this is still a work in progress. So even if you have visited Ramster in the past, there will still be new experiences and colourful vistas for you to explore.

The visit will commence with tea/coffee, followed by a short introductory talk before we invite you to take your self-guided trail leaflets and set off to explore the grounds. The landscape is made up of wooded glades, more structured beds & borders plus valleys and water features – a very varied range of habitats and micro-climates each lending themselves to different plants.

Your stroll around the gardens is, effectively, open ended. Most first time visitors typically take 2 – 2.5 hours to wander around but, being self-guided, you can take as long as you like. The Tea House sells sandwiches, so you may wish to take a break for lunch and then continue to explore. Alternatively, to extend your day, why not spend the afternoon in Chiddingfold, Haslemere or Petworth – all of which are within easy reach.

The paths are a mixture of grass and hard surfaces, but please ensure you wear shoes with grips as some paths can be slippery when wet. There are benches situated throughout the garden for you to rest or just enjoy the scenery.

This event is not suitable for children under 12. Dogs on leads are welcomed by Ramster’s owners.

The cost of the event is £10 for members and £12 for non-members and includes tea / coffee on arrival.
